Daniele Di Virgilio is an Italian Berlin-based composer and perpetual researcher. Conceiving composition as a multi-disciplinary and social-oriented expression, his music is inspired by a theatrical imagination and focuses on manipulating and transfiguring human archetypes and cultural references, culminating in the grotesque.
He studied Composition, Orchestral Conducting, History and Musicology at the Conservatory and University of Turin. In 2022 he completed a traineeship in Composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), under the guidance of Howard Skempton, Joe Cutler and Richard Ayres. He also attended masterclasses with Francesco Filidei, Ivan Fedele, Frank Bedrossian, Alessandro Solbiati, Oscar Bianchi, George Lewis, Jukka Tiensuu, Stefano Gervasoni and Clemens Gadenstätter. Mentee of Peter Eötvös Foundation in 2024, now he is Meisterschüler (post-graduate) at Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), studying with Elena Mendoza.
Daniele has been awarded in several international composition prizes, such as the first edition of the International Competition "Michele Novaro", promoted by the Italian Deputy Chamber, the 3rd International Eduardas Balsys Young Composers Competition (Lithuania), the Busan Choral Festival & Competition (South Korea) and the XIX George Enescu Competition (Romania).
His music has been commissioned, performed and promoted by renowned ensembles and institutions, such as Mito Settembre Musica, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, JACK Quartet, Fidelio Trio, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, Quatour Lontano, Ensemble Kochi, Divertimento Ensemble, Peter Eötvös Foundation, Vacuum Quartet, Riga “Ave Sol” Chamber Choir, Zone Experimentale Basel, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, Barcelona Modern, impuls Festival, and awarded by Krzysztof Penderecki, Pascal Dusapin, Magnus Lindberg, Zygmunt Krauze, Stefano Gervasoni, Ēriks Ešenvalds and Fabio Vacchi.
He had his compositions published by Babel Scores (Paris) and Casa Musicale Sonzogno (Milan).
